Yves\u00c2\u00a0Saint Laurent (YSL), a fashion designer may seem an odd choice for home designers and\u00c2\u00a0workrooms, but there is much to be learned from each other.\u00c2\u00a0 One of the things I learned was, even YSL borrowed ideas from other artists and cultures.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02380_21-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"dsc02380_21\" width=\"135\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02380_21-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02380_21.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 135px) 100vw, 135px\" \/>I am not a clothes hound, but I lust for beautiful textiles, proportions and craftsmanship. Thus going to the Yves Saint Laurent show appealed to me on a different level than it would for many other people. I was looking for fun, inspiring ideas to share with my clients and construction techniques for home decor and soft goods, rather than clothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Look but <strong>don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t touch<\/strong>! These activities can be torturous to me.\u00c2\u00a0 I need to touch and explore how things are done.\u00c2\u00a0 However the black suited museum workers wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t even let me wear my purse on my back, for fear I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d bump into a display, let alone allow me to touch anything. But the thirst for knowledge is strong!\u00c2\u00a0 Imagine for a moment the mystery of a hem held up by magic, then me on my knees on the floor, while I trying to look up an Yves Saint Laurent Dress to see how they made the hem without any\u00c2\u00a0stitches.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Is fully lined?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d No, well darn, it looks hemmed but where are the stitches. How did they do that?\u00c2\u00a0 That question remains unanswered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However a couple of other questions were answered by the internet and Trish at the Textile Arts Council.\u00c2\u00a0 Several of us noticed a couple of fabrics and an embellishment we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d never heard of:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Barathea Wool<\/strong>: A closely woven fabric of worsted silk, rayon, cotton, or wool, having a pebbled surface. English in origin and originally made as a mourning cloth.\u00c2\u00a0 It is very hard wearing and still often dyed black.\u00c2\u00a0 In case you aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t familiar with the term worsted: Worsted wool is combed, leaving the long fibers before spinning to make a stronger, finer and more wrinkle resistant fabric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-25\" src=\"http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02381_2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"dsc02381_2\" width=\"142\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02381_2-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02381_2-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02381_2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 142px) 100vw, 142px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Silk Gazar<\/strong>: A term which does not appear to have come into general use until 1967; this fabric was developed by Balenciaga, together with textile designer Gustav Zumsteg. It is a heavy, sized silk sheer of even texture.\u00c2\u00a0 Although it is too small to read here, this sketch says \u00e2\u20ac\u0153gazar violet\u00e2\u20ac\u009d inthe top right corner, with a swatch in the lower left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A <strong>cabochon<\/strong> or cabachon, from the Middle French caboche (head), is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to facetted.\u00c2\u00a0 These were used on several pieces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yves Saint Laurent is credited with the emancipation of women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fashion with his tuxedo look and the democratization for high fashion with his Rive Gauche line, when he used clothing elements of the masses.\u00c2\u00a0 YSL found inspiration many place, but the three main areas show cased at the de Young were Fine Artist, Foregin Cultures, and Nature.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-28\" src=\"http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02386_2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"dsc02386_2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><strong>Fine Artists<\/strong> such as Picasso, Matisse, Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Braque, Tom Wesselman, Piet Mondrian were represented.\u00c2\u00a0 (image &#8211; Picasso Evening Dress, 1979)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-32\" src=\"http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02385_21-95x300.jpg\" alt=\"dsc02385_21\" width=\"95\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02385_21-95x300.jpg 95w, http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02385_21.jpg 114w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 95px) 100vw, 95px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Foreign Cultures<\/strong> gave flare to many of his designs as seen in his African, Moraccan, Chinese, Russian collections. (image Bambara dress, African collection, 1967)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-29\" src=\"http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02379_2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"dsc02379_2\" width=\"135\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02379_2-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.santacruzsoftgoods.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/dsc02379_2.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 135px) 100vw, 135px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Nature<\/strong> provided elements through both flora and\u00c2\u00a0fauna as seen with his use of feathers,\u00c2\u00a0 leaves, horse hair, butterflies and silk flowers.
